Anti-oppression is the bare minimum.

I want to help you embody anti-oppression in your practice and in your life. I firmly believe that without this lens, we can’t fully support our clients in a meaningful way. I want to help you understand how your office, your agency, your program, and your therapeutic style can be more culturally informed from an anti-oppressive perspective. My style is warm and approachable, but I will also call you out. If it feels too comfortable, I’m not doing my job (or maybe you’re not doing yours). I have a few presentations that I offer quite regularly (see below for a description), but I also like to curate workshops that meet your program’s specific needs. I most enjoy working with mental health clinicians who have foundational knowledge around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, but I have been known to work with professionals in other areas as well. If this doesn’t exactly sound like what you’re looking for, see bottom of the page for my recommendations for professionals offering other trainings that might suit your needs more closely.

Presentations

Brave Conversations*: In conversations about Race and Racism, it is often said: "I didn't know what to say, so I didn't say anything." This training is for mental health clinicians who want to learn what to say, and how to overcome the fear and anxiety that gets in the way of saying it. During the session, participants will receive an introduction into deepening their understanding about how Race impacts interpersonal relationships, and how to initiate dialogue about these issues within a professional relationship. Participants will expand their vocabulary around topics specific to antiracism, begin unpacking their own racial identities, and develop techniques to navigate conversations about sensitive topics.

Racial Trauma : An overview of how to define Racial Trauma, how it arises in clinical relationships between therapist and client, and specific resources for continuing education.

Naming the White (Supremacy) Elephant in the Room*: This presentation begins by setting a framework and common language around antiracism and white supremacy culture, specifically in the context of social work and practices of mental health. Then, we will unpack the Social Work Code of Ethics and uncover ways in which the Code upholds and maintains white supremacy culture (intentionally and unintentionally) as well as identifying tangible ways to disrupt and challenge these systems in social work practice.
*For social workers
